What is this risk assessment for?

This risk assessment is for a basic deployment of one of the teams large or trailer masts. Site specific risk assessments may be required in addition to this assessment.

Slips, Trips and FallsTeam Members
  • Team Members to wear suitable footwear for rigging / setup.
  • All Cables and ropes are to be fully uncoiled during rigging.
  • All Areas to be always kept tidy.
  • Ground must be flat and even.
  • Only Rigging / Setup team to be present.
  • Rigging & Setup to be supervised by an experienced team member.
  • All extra cable & rope are to be neatly tidied up as soon as practically possible after rigging.
  • All cables should be either a ground level covered with matting / tape OR at high level secured safely out any access routes.
  • Area below any mast is to be fenced off so nobody enters the area

  • All team members should wear gloves during rigging of masts.

  • All team members involved in rigging will always wear hard hats.
  • Only people directly involved with rigging in the area.
  • No team members are to be underneath the mast’s drop path whilst using the luffing system (Trailer mast – moving from horizonal to vertical)
  • Experienced team member to fully check mast before elevation.
  • Masts will be inspected before use and any defects remedied before use

  • Any mast will be deployed on firm flat ground.
  • The mast will use its base stabilisation (Legs or base plate) and should be level before any further rigging will start.
  • Masts will be suitably guyed out with at least 2 tiers of guy ropes (for masts over 6m)
  • Mast Guying will be overseen by an experienced team member.
  • Forecasted wind speed to be reviewed before event – if wind is forecast over (40mph – Lightweight masts) (60mph – Trailer Mast) – discuss with the Event Lead / Unit Manager

Ice DroppingTeam Members, anyone walking in the vicinity of the mast
  • Ice buildup and breakaway should be considered for all masts when the temperature is below 5’c
  • The area below the mast will be fenced off.
  • Masts will be monitored to note if buildup is happening.
  • Where possible – de-rigging will take place once the temperature has warmed up. – If not possible – a visual inspection will need to be taken to ascertain if there is any ice buildup.

  • Check using NATS “Drone Assist” on to locate any nearby airports. If airport nearby – Contact Air Traffic Control to discuss prior to event.
  • Display a Red Light permanently lit at the top of the mast.
  • Only elevate mast to the required hight to cover the event. Not full height

  • Apply proper manual handling procedures when lifting the mast.

This Risk Assessment is not definitive – and all tasks will be completed whilst also using a dynamic risk assessment for any new risks.
